The Highlights: As a member of the Reference, Instruction, and Academic Engagement team, the Science and Data Services Librarian will serve as a liaison to the departments of Biological Sciences, Neuroscience, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Physics & Astrophysics, Mathematical Sciences, and Geography & GIS and will play a key role in developing programmatic support of numerical and geospatial data services, including facilitating access to data resources and providing research and instruction support to faculty and students in their use across the curriculum. The position will also collaborate with the Scholarly Communications Librarian and others to support Open Science initiatives on campus. The Science and Data Services Librarian will work in a highly-supportive and collegial culture that encourages active participation in meaningful and valuable skills training and professional development. This includes workshops, committee memberships, and engagement in programs that support the Library’s mission and its inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility goals, while building connections and partnerships across DePaul’s wider academic and user community. What You'll Do: Liaison Responsibilities, Research Support, and Instruction Builds strong working relationships with faculty, students, and staff in assigned areas to understand user needs and facilitate integration of library resources into curricula and research projects across departments, institutes, and centers. Provides reference and research support across multiple formats and venues (e.g. in-person, online chat, Zoom or phone). Develops and delivers in-person and virtual library instruction sessions, training workshops, orientations, and other programming to build users’ information literacy skills and promote the use of information resources. Participates in the Library’s programmatic instruction program supporting students enrolled in first-year writing courses. Creates and develops research guides (“LibGuides”), online tutorials, and other learning objects that support sciences or cross-disciplinary subject areas, courses, and research activities. In assigned subject areas, builds and maintains collections in a variety of formats that support the current and future teaching, learning, and research needs of DePaul’s diverse academic community. Manages library collection funds and monitors budgets in assigned subject areas. Data Services Provides consultation, research support, and instruction in the discovery and use of statistical, numerical, and GIS data resources to the broad campus community. Collaborates with instructors to support the development of students’ data literacy skills and facilitate the use of data in their classes. Consults with researchers and develops workshops and training sessions on best practices for research data management and sharing, data visualization, and analysis. Evaluates and selects data-related resources and subscriptions as part of the overall collection development strategy. Participates in outreach initiatives aimed at enhancing awareness of data information literacy, resources, and services. Open Sciences and Scholarly Communication Partners with the Scholarly Communication Librarian in implementing open access initiatives and expanding library support for open and public scholarship at DePaul University. Support researchers to make output from their research open, including publications, preprints, and data. Participate in outreach efforts related to open science, the institutional repository, and transformative agreements. Develops programming and documentation on publishing topics, including open data and open science, and works collaboratively with librarians and across the university to promote and support knowledge equity and open access opportunities. Assists science faculty in adopting and creating open educational resources and promotes open pedagogy practices, including renewable assignments and student knowledge creation. Professional Development & Service Activities Keeps up-to-date on the latest developments and best practices in academic librarianship, higher education, and emerging technology through participation in relevant professional organizations, conferences, workshops. Serves on library-wide committees, task forces, or working groups and professional development activities and initiatives. This position splits time between the John T. Richardson Library in Lincoln Park and DePaul’s Loop Campus in downtown Chicago. Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program (or equivalent) required. Bachelor’s and/or second master’s degree in a field related to science or data preferred. Two (2) years of professional library experience, including at least one year of instruction and reference services or research support in an academic library required. Coursework or demonstrated knowledge and experience with data services, with particular focus on research practices relating to data discovery, data information literacy, geographic information systems, and data management. Familiarity with scientific research practices and science information resources in multiple formats. Experience working with science faculty, students and/or researchers in an academic library setting is preferred. Demonstrated ability to communicate and effectively interact with people across cultural identities and foster an inclusive, equitable, and welcoming environment. Knowledge of national and international trends in scholarly communication and data services.
